Beating of the Bounds
NOTICE OF BEATING THE BOUNDS
To all residents, parishioners, friends and neighbours of Widecombe-in-the-Moor:
Be it known that the Parish Council of Widecombe-in-the-Moor intends to undertake the ancient custom of Beating the Bounds of the Parish during the month of September.
This time-honoured tradition, observed for centuries throughout England, provides an opportunity for parishioners to walk the boundaries of their parish, to renew knowledge of its extent, celebrate our shared heritage, and strengthen the bonds of community and place.
All residents and those with an interest in the parish are warmly invited to take part in this special occasion. The route will follow sections of the historic parish boundary, and participants will have the opportunity to learn about the landscape, history and landmarks that define our parish.
The Beating of the Bounds will be undertaken in three stages across the three weekends following Widecombe Fair. Places will be limited and advance booking will be required. Priority will be given to parishioners and those with close ties to the parish and community, particularly those able to participate in all three stages of the route. Full details of the arrangements and booking process will be published in August.
